Once Upon A Dream

Friday, June 17, 2016

As a child, I'm sure we remember adults asking, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”  Then we proceed to say ballerina, firefighter, astronaut, doctor, lawyer, scientist, engineer, or pro athlete. Those were the days. Once we've grown up we tend to lose sight of our childhood dreams, but it doesn't mean that we can’t go back and go after what we've always wanted. When we were younger, we were told that we can do or become anything we want to be. Knowing this as a child, made us feel fearless which encouraged us to go for it.  We go through so many phases growing up, such as losing and gaining friends, good or bad relationships, body issues, education, our finances, and career goals. Going through all these changes could dampen the confidence that we once had as a child. For many of us, we even lose the support we once had as a child or as a young adult.  The words "you can do it" are now a distant memory.   When that happens, we have to find it in ourselves to believe in our own abilities.  We can no longer rely on other people's approval as a crutch.  Of course, this isn't easy.  As children, we often had someone's approval of every milestone we made. I guess when we enter into adulthood, some people may not believe encouraging someone is necessary.  Just imagine if we all supported each other in whatever we wanted to do. All of our dreams could come true. Unfortunately, we don't live in a system as beautiful as that one.  Instead, build a relationship with God, rely on his word and his approval of who you are. Through God, you can become any and everything that you dreamed of as a child. If by any chance your dreams have changed from childhood, that's okay.  As a child, I once dreamt of being a math teacher and fashion designer.  As I can testify today, that one of those dreams is no longer my reality.  I still think about being a fashion designer… Yeah, I just might have to revisit that one.  Go after your dreams!  Continue to pray and allow God to lead you during your process. Challenges before us as adults are far different and more complexed than when we were kids.  So let's not regret having not pursued our dreams. Believe in YOU and pursue your dream(s)!
